This sweet simple song does what folk songs do best; invite
everyone to sing and make up new verses so it can keep going!
It’s great year-round, but a special favorite for Valentine’s
Day.
I have stayed true to the traditional version here, but if you
go onto YouTube
you’ll find many fun variations, and if you ask children, you’ll
be flooded with endless possibilities. Forget about the literal
words, and just suggest animals.
Start each verse with an animal and have children finish the
sentence. Like…
There’s a little bee a buzzin’ in my
heart
There’s a little cow a mooing in my heart
There’s a little bird a singing in my heart
There’s a little bunny hopping in my heart
You can take it s step further with
these ideas:
-
Have a basket of paper hearts, each
with an animal on it. Have each child choose one, and make up
the verse for everyone to sing (a child who picks a heart with a
puppy on it might say, “There’s a little puppy playing in my
heart”). It’s always fun and entertaining when children have
input!
-
Write the sentence on a white board,
and erase and replace the noun and verb as each children provide
them. They will see how the rest of the words in the sentence
remain the same, and get a feeling for nouns, verbs, and
sentence structure by participating in the process.
-
If you want to expand the parts of
speech, have children change the adjective (little), as well.
You can even make the adjectives specific categories, like
moods, colors, size.song!
There’s a
Little Wheel a’ Turnin’ In My Heart
There’s a little wheel a turnin’ in my heart
There’s a little wheel a turning’ in my heart
In my heart, in my heart
There’s a little wheel a turnin’ in my heart
There’s a little bell a ringin’ in my heart
There’s a little bell a ringin’ in my heart
In my heart, in my heart
There’s a little bell a ringin’ in my heart
There’s a little song a singin’ in my heart
There’s a little wheel a singin’ in my heart
In my heart, in my heart
There’s a singin’ in my heart
Oh I feel so very happy in my heart
Oh I feel so very happy in my heart
In my heart, in my heart
Oh I feel so very happy in my heart
(repeat first verse)
