September is apple time, and I know
teachers are always looking for new activities. We are so lucky these days
to have a variety of apples year-round, and this song offers children a fun
way to sample and discuss some of them.
Do ahead of time:
Purchase 5 different varieties of apples, peel off the stickers, and cut
them into slices. You can save the stickers and display them for the
children to see.
Have a paper towel for each child. Write the numbers from 1-5 across the
bottom of each, and write the names of the five varieties above the numbers.
Then place a paper towel at each child’s place, and place one slice of each
apple above the numbers. Each child will try a slice of each variety as the
song directs. On the last verse, children can choose their favorites, and
eat whatever remains. After the song you can discuss which apples the
children liked, and why (were they sweet or tart, soft or crunchy?).
Additional Activities:
Make special apple placemats (laminate for continued use) with the numbers
and varieties written on them.
Parents can also have children help shop for the apples. Talk about how some
apple are good for pies, and some for applesauce or eating.
Have children bring in stickers from their favorite apples at home, and
start a classroom apple sticker collection.
